Is this true? I've been told my 17'' lcd with a standard res. of 1280x0124 at its highest would support HD gaming for my Xbox 360?

HD on a TV & HD on a PC monitor are apples & oranges.

Relative to TV monitors PC monitors are all high defenition because their resolution is way over the standard 480 lines of non HD televisions.

I have read articles that confirm this. My thought though is that at 17", HD isn't going to look a whole lot different from standard definition.

If by "HD" you mean "Hi-Def", then no. Your monitor isn't HiDef unless it's marked on the outside screen.
