I have exactly the same problem! My friend's washing smells georgeous and she uses Bold Apple Blossom and lime zest with the yellow coloured Lenor. But I tried this and my washing just won't smell like hers, it is a mystery. I have also tried different temperatures, tumble drying or on the line and still no luck. I posted a similar question a few weeks ago. I think it's got something to do with the hardness/softness of the water.

My favourite is actually a liquid, Persil Aloe Vera.
It smells yummy and clean and you don't need fabric conditioner becuase of the aloe vera!
You get what you want this way and help out the environment. You need about 50mls for an average size wash.

If you don't want a perfume smell, try arm&hammers laundry powder. I have problems with perfumes and this smells nice without the perfume. I use Downy Free for my conditioner, except for my towels, and use a scent free dryer sheet. For towels, to make them absorb more, I use white vinegar instead of conditioner. (The smell of the vinegar will go away once they dry.)

I don't know about washing powder but the only conditioner i've used that works & really softens & leaves a nice small is Comfort (the new coloured versions) & the one with alomd & jojoba oil is very softening.
Also tesco's easy iron is not bad.

Surf is good not only for the smell but it removes stains too.
Concentrated Lenor is the best, you can add just a little more and that way the clothes are not only soft, but the smells lasts longer too.

I prefer Surf for the wash (comes in powder or liquid), then add Downy Fabric Softner.
Both come in more than 1 frangrance so experiment and find what pleases you best.
Good luck!

I always get the sainsburys brands. Smell nice bit cheaper and they do not test on animals like most of the other well known brands.

Daz or sainsbury's own biological washing tablets together with a fabric conditioner of your choice.
Don't forget your scented ironing water!!!
