Standby By and Hibernate are cranky things and will often refuse to wake up.
A lot of Desktop PC's and most generic ones do not work well or at all with power saving features as mentioned above.
These power saving features are designed generally for Laptops with power issues because of there use of battery power.
For Desktops "manual" Power Saving is best - Turn it off, or limit the feature to turning of the monitor.
There is a school of thought that computers last longer if left running all the time and this may be true
But computers are now like Mobile Phones - who wants a 3 year old one.
Yes just you and me!!

he may have a program set to run when he logs on that is causing the freeze....try using msconfig (click start then run then type msconfig and click ok) go to the startup tab and uncheck items you think might be causing the problem, also go to the services tab and first check the box to hide microsoft programs and then uncheck the rest. You may either have to log in with the default admin account (f8 during bootup and then slect safe mode) or you may be able to do this under your account depending on what security settings he has for his account.
This isn't going to fix the problem but it will at least get you started in the rright direction to fix it.
