why do people talk of "from the bottom of my heart"; "I can feel it in my heart"; "my heart is at peace". And worse - "a heartless person" while that person is still alive? Isn't the heart that organ pumping one's blood? So, how can some emotional feeling be at the bottom of that organ; and how can a person be said to be heartless whilst that organ is busy doing its work?

This is a figure of speech as old as the hills when people thought emotions came from the heart. Emotions really come from the brain not the heart. They aren't talking about what the real heart is doing. They are talking about how the person shows emotion.

Hearts allow people to experience life and love, amongst other things. A person's heart flutters when their in love or it can be an intuitive which is why many people say "I can feel it in my heart" feeling. A person's heart fills up from the bottom to the top which is why people say "from the bottom of my heart." "My heart is at peace" simply means their heart isn't giving them problems or that their heart isn't giving them an intuitive feeling. I've been called "a heartless person" (which I'm not) but this means that a person doesn't feel the feelings that are worth feeling like happiness or love. The heart that people refer to in all of these is a figure of speech.

The heart is the central organ in order to sustain life. Life begins at the first heart beat and ends at the last heart beat making the heart a good analogy in reference to emotions...expresses the depth and magnitude of such statements. Better than saying "I can feel it in my brain" or "my liver is at peace". Also the heart is referred to the core of something...the heart of an artichoke for example. Perhaps we could say " from the bottom of the heart of my being".

i think the reason the heart was associated with feeling and emotions is the fact that when there is a sadden shift in our state of mind like fear, excitement, anger etc. the heart starts to bump more blood and the mussels moves, so the most obvious organ of your body at this very moment that makes the action is the heart... maybe this is the reason why?

You are talking of the material heart, what is refered to is the poetic heart.... the poetic heart resides in the chest along side the material heart, you can know when you have one because you can feel it when it breaks, you can feel it in sorrow and can feel it tighten when emotion begins to pour out of you, you can feel it beat with love when you cant live without someone. And it can spot a heartless person in a heartbeat.

I think there is more than routine euphemism in associating heart with emotions..... most emotions at peak have the ability to excite us... and that increases our heart beat which we can physically feel and know. On the contrary, if anyone says he feels with his brain, which is the scientific truth, it would be difficult to feel the involvement of our brain ...... for some reason, emotions do not seem to cause any physical headache either, whereas one does feel something happening in the heart.

Watch the last few minutes of "How The Grinch Stole Christmas"

You're quite right. You're heart is nothing more than an organ. If you're a doctor. You're heart is your very being. Without it, you're nothing more than a pile of parts. To speek from your heart means to speek from your soul, it's almost like laying down the honour of what gives life if you are lying. You're putting everything you have on the line when speeking from the heart.

For you to ask this question it tells that there is very little emotions in you that you show those around you. You are a complete realist and do not seem to have the time to be of emotions. This is not a bad thing, it is just what makes you tick. But, for someone who does "feel" things around her to answer the question you asked is not a fair question. Because for you to not understand, and ask.....means that I who understand do not understand how you do not understand.
