Does anyone have a pattern for knitting buttons I know that years ago my gran used to make buttons by knitting them and they looked effective and I thought that I would try to experiment, but can you get a pattern to do this? I would appreciate it if anyone knows. Thanks

Knitted Buttons

If you have some shank buttons (the kind that tend to have a metal loop on the back) you can make knitted button covers for them quite easily.

Just knit a square swatch in the yarn of your choosing that would cover the front of the button with enough all around to bring behind the button. Thread a durable smooth thread (like embroidery floss) in a matching color in and out all around your swatch, leaving a long tail. Place the button in the center of the swatch and pull the tail of the thread, this will cinch the swatch around your button. Voila! A knit button cover.

The smaller the gauge yarn and needles, the less bulky the button will be. On a variation, you can buy blank button forms in most hobby shops to cover if you choose not to use a pre-made button. You could also get a little more in depth when it comes to the "swatch" and make it circular by using increases and decreases. They're small, play around a bit to see what you like the most. I've seen some handmade button covers that were embroidered after the swatches were knit and they were beautiful. Have fun with them!

Find a pattern with 'bobbles' in and just use the 'bobble' part.

Seem to think it is - cast on 1st, then knit and purl 5 times (or as many as you need) into same stitch then knit four or five rows, cast off by slipping thread through all stitches and attach to the thread at the beginning.

Can't find my pattern book at the moment!

Good luck.

I know you could buy a plastic button that you could weave the wool in and out of to match your garment. I got mine from a good wool shop
