Just built a new system and I'm having problems with my dvd/cd burner combo. It's a Samsung sh-s182d and it worked for awhile, but then Windows stopped detecting it. Then I finally got it to work again after I plugged it into a different chord, but it didn't burn cd's properly and now it's not working again. I'll list my system specs just so you know...

Core 2 duo E6600 @ 2.4GHz
2Gigs RAM
GeForce 7950 GT KO
Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard
550W Antec power supply.

None of the other specs should affect this. I'd like opinions on whether this is a hardware failure coming from the drive or another system component. Everything is brand new so hopefully it isn't the mobo. If it's the drive it can easily be replaced. Thanks in advance.

Also, the drive opens and closes when I push the button, so I know it's not the power supply.

Try to re-install the drivers.
Check the cable whether it's plugged properly.
If you have 2 optical drives, make sure 1 of them to be set as master, while other set as slave.

maybe you have to re-add your dvd-rw (as added to the system not your CPU)
