Well, both groups of people have their full freedom to do so. But tradition is hard to change, and it's impossible to change it overnight. So, just embrace that, after all nothing you will be lost even there will be millions of Marias in this universe. After all, every person is unique. So no two MARIAS are the same.

It is not only the Spanish and Italians that name their daughters Maria, the name Maria is also very popular in Greece and all the Spanish speaking countries in the world.
In my family, I have a sister called Maria, my grandmother is Maria, two cousins are called Maria, our neighbor's wife is Maria and a lot more. After Jesus, the Virgin Mary stands very high in the belief of the people of these countries.

How do you solve a problem like Maria? Its not just the hispanics & Italians, you know. It is Catholics in general. You also have Marie, Mary, Mariana, Mariela,Maryanne, etc,etc,etc.... It doesnt bother me but I'm sure all the Marys would agree with you!

Well, a lot of them also name their daughter's Teresa. I would advocate a law requiring them to name their daughters Corky, LaLa or Beezlebub.
