Is there much crime in the area? Is it mainly old people, or young students or families?
I am thinking of moving to the area, I am a single 20 year old female and I am not a hippie, I am a regular person.

I lived there over a year ago for about a year. It was handy in that it was close to the city, however it is a bit overpriced! It doesn't have as much around it as the Eastern Suburbs where I now live. I think you need a car and plenty of friends if you move to Petersham/Lewisham but if you move to the other areas of Sydney there is more to do, more people around and hence no need for a car as much.

Petersham/Lewisham areas are great. Lovely old terraces, mostly Federation (1910-1920) style. I lived in Newtown for many years and over the years, it became a young business style living area. Very trendy. Petersham/Lewisham areas are on a railway line, good hospital, trendy shops and restaurants and beautiful parks. I would suggest you get in early. Crime is everywhere - just be careful. Good tip - don't do up the front of your house too much. Mine was pink and stayed pink. Advice from Newtown Police. They loved it. Pot plants were stolen off verandah - I didn't replace them. I concentrated on renovating the inside and just laughed about the appearance of the front. It works. Good luck. Cheers.

I used to live there for 10 years before I moved to brisbane.
Very handy area, train line and good bus routes, 412 to city and 445 to balmain. On friday and sat nights area is full of drunks late at night from the Petersham RSL and Oxford tavern. I also remember the odd drug bust on people in the street (notice no mention of where they came out from), be careful but area is no worse than anywhere else in Sydney. To buy cheap food, eg from Franklins or Woolies, etc, you'll have to go to Leichhardt or Ashfield. Old people and young in the area, a healthy mix. If you leave your car outside, expect it to be scratched. Goodluck.
