I am about to get my B.A. in Political Science from UCR and I am not sure if I should take a year off to strengthen my applications and resume before I apply to the grad schools of my choice.

I'd take a year off, but don't blow it traveling. Yeah, life experiences and that stuff are nice, but they don't help for grad school. Spend that year working or interning or something. If you wanna travel, do it in a foreign place. That's the kind of "life" experience that I see is the most beneficial.

I went straight into grad school after college and after seeing classmates who took some time off (but didn't waste it), I think taking a year off is very beneficial to success in grad school and beyond.

My only advice is that you could spend a year travelling and seeing the world - you'll never get a chance again to have a year off when you start work so take advantage.
Broadening your horizons can only help you so make sure you have a place to go to after but go travelling!
Alternatively, why not tyr to get an internship or job for that year relevant to what you want to do career wise?
Good luck!

Sure, take time off if you need or want to. But apply to Grad. school now, if you don't get in this time, you can try again after your year and if you get in and still feel you need time off (you can always put your acceptence on hold for a year ot two.)

get your masters....its only one more year of hard work....
it'll get you a better job and more money....
moreover....it would be easier....since your already studying and all but if you take a year off....you may get lazy or something......
