There is no such word as Islamist... Its a word that has been created to define someone who is percieved as strict believer in the religion of Islam.

What is ironic is that the terms are definetly not interchangeable, but in this world of today, with Islam being assaulted on many of the media fronts as a religion that promotes violence and terrorism, the terms do seem to be used interchangeably.

Islamist is to Muslim as Christianitist is to Christian.

There never was such a word. Its a made-up word that hold a negative connotation.

Islam is the name of the actual religion. A Muslim is someone who follows the teachings of Islam. For example Christianity is the religion and a Christian is the follower.

Islamist has come to mean a radical Muslim. Not far from Islamo-Fascist (whatever that means). It ignores the 99.99999999% of Muslims who are reasonable, peace loving people.
