we've bought a snake and it will not go down the bathtub drain because of the way the drain is configured. There is a bar blocking access of the snake. We also have water coming out of the showerhead whenever the faucet is turned on. In the other bathroom the drain in the sink is super slow.
Is it possible to fix all this ourselves or should we just call plumber?

A few things you can do before calling the plumber:

1. Use a plunger. The plunger has to be worked vigorously. Imagine the plug is loosely attached to the wall of the pipe and that every time you plunge it loosens it but not sufficiently to disengage the plug. By working the plunger relentlessly and by forcing water against the plug, you may send that sucker on its way.

2. Pour lots of boiling water down the drain. A plug is often composed of hair and soap. The hot water dissolves the soap.

3. If you have to use the snake, go underneath the sink and unscrew the fittings around the trap. Insert the snake into the pipe from there. You're trying to get at the plug that is far enough along that it is affecting both the tub and the sink. It might help both.

4. If none of that works, use the chemicals before calling the plumber or the Roto-Router Company.

5. The shower problem is a result of the diverter. If you can, you can replace it.

Bathtub Clogged

Have you tried Draino yet? Or a similar product?
If they don't work remove the U-joint and clean it. It is usually just past the drain. Sometimes you can just remove the the plug at the bottom of the you and clear it out from there. Use a pipe wrench on the large square nut. Otherwise you unscrew the rings at either ends of the U-joint for removal. You should also be able to use the snake after removing the U-joint or the plug from it. Take the water out of the bathtub so there will be less of a mess when removing the U-joint.

Good Luck!

I am going to kind of go against the flow and suggest you NOT
use Drano or Liquid Plumber or any of those do it yourself
chemicals. Plumbers HATE that stuff because it gels in the
pipes and makes the plug worse. Also, your bathtub isn't
draining at all. You don't want a very caustic substance like
that sitting in the water that may be trapped in your bathtub.
I'd suggest trying to clean out your main line in the basement
like dragon suggested. If that doesn't work call a plumber.

Clogged Bathtub

I would definately try liquid plumber or drano first, just give it a good ammount of time to penetrate and work. also you may want to remove the stoper assembly before pouring in the drano

I had a smilar problem several weeks ago, put the drano in, flushed it out after only 30 mins or an hour and was dissapointed that i got veeeery minimal results. however after another application and over 24 hrs later the drain started clearing and was eventually free flowing again

So long as your drainage isn't going into a seapage pit I did this. I have a vax vacuum cleaner. I put it on wet vax and surrounded the end of the vacuum hose with an old rag to make a vacuum. It sucked out everything in the drain.(Block nose though!) Very stinky job. The tap might need new rubber seals so it turns off tighter without as much effort. This should stop the leak.

wow... you're really up shiz creek LOL is there another place where you can gain access to the pipes? like, an external entry on the side of the house? You could try to remove the bar too, but I'm wondering why its even there LOL I have no idea what to tell you about the showerhead-faucet dealio, sorry... you may want to call a plumber, or you could ask one of your neighbhors. My dad and I haveta fix plugs in the pipes at our house like, twice a year or something, and our neighbhor across the street, the husband fixes the stuff at their house too, so we ask him if we're stuck and nothing's working LOL Good luck, hope that gets fixed soon!

Buy some good ole DRANO. You can go to one of the plumbing stores or hardware stores, buy a book and fix the leak yourself. It might be cheaper than a plumber and you learn something. Guys at the hardware store could help a little with advice too. Now if money is no object, call the plumber.

Sounds like your main drain is plugged up. You can mess with this all day and make it worse or, call a plumber. By the time you spend the money, on all these incidental things that well wishers hope to have you solve your problems with, a plumber can do it faster, better and cheaper.
