If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

I strongly suggest that you state what operating system are you using, but anyway, here are some tips.

If you're using Windows 9x You must have a USB 2 to USB 1.1 converter as USB 2 might not function properly on Windows 98.

Check Connections

Reinstall the drivers, or in Windows XP, do a Driver Rollback

Have you installed the drivers for it? Have you connected it properly? If it's USB, then you need drivers unless you have Windows 2000 and above but you still might need different drivers. When you connect your drive through USB in Windows XP, it should make a connection sound which is two dongs. Also, it may not have been assigned a drive letter.

have you formated the drive?
is it a brand new hard drive (HD)?
you need to configure few stuff first to use it.
go under control panel>administrative tool>computer management> storage>disk management(local)
there should be your hard drive.
there you can create partions and enable your Hard drive.
