You are completely correct "you cannot control things."
Regret or Resentment always stem from there. But, we can learn from it.
We are always blessed with choice. What to do with those feeling about the past, that can have us feeling, stronger and better for our futures.
Life is about lessons learned.
Let me ask you a question. "How well can you walk backwards?"
Can you see what's in your present situations, your future?
Well, when we focus too much on our "pasts." Instead of taking the necessary pause and then, start moving forward. We start walking backward.
It doesn't work very well. You miss step, and sometimes, run into things. It can be painful!
Learn what you need to about the past. Gather up that knowledge, and bring it along for your future.

I think once you can accept that "everything happens for a reason", whether it's good or bad, we all learn from our mistakes and grow from there.
We only have control if we take control over certain situations, but sometimes obstacles are placed in our path to teach us something.
Would you really want to change your past though?? I mean, everything you've experienced, seen, heard, learned, and endured, is a result of the person you are, today.
You are ambitious, strong, open-minded, caring, nurturing, understanding, and a loving individual who has a lot of history behind you that has many stories attached to it.
Don't be ashamed of what your past says about you. You've learned from that, and are ready to move forward. Don't be stuck in the past, because that's behind you now. Focus on the present and look forward to what's ahead.
I went through a very hard childhood, and was an alcoholic. I made a lot of mistakes and made poor choices in my earlier years. I said and did things that were wrong, in my eyes, and I had to really take a good, hard look at what my history was telling me. I learned, over the years, that because everything happens for a reason, these things I went through, and what I did, taught me a whole lot about myself. In that process, I learned that I shouldn't want to change my past, because it's what made me into who I am today. I feel I have grown so much, and I learned so much (some things I learned the hard way).
Don't dwell on the past, though. It doesn't do you any good to worry about something that's already been said and done.
If it's your flaws or mistakes that you're worried about, then don't let that make you lose any sleep! We're all human! We all make mistakes, but it's how we learn from those mistakes and move on, that makes us stronger, as individuals.
So, take a look at your life, from before, and know that every obstacle that was placed in your path, was meant to be there, for some reason. You need to figure that out and understand what you learned from that. You may just be ready to learn from them, now, if you're ready to do this. It may take some people longer to get this perception on life, but it works for most people.
Don't beat yourself up over some things you may have done that you want to take back, though. If it's something you said or did to someone who's with you now, or in your family/friends circle, then talk to them. Communication with family and friends makes it easier to put those things behind you so you can move on!
Be happy. Be thankful, every morning when you wake up, that you are given another day to accomplish your goals and dreams. You're in the present. You're not in the past.
