To broadcast the wireless:
If you have a high speed connection already you will need to buy a wireless router. If you do not already have cable/dsl then you might call and ask for pricing on the equipment from them. Be sure to look up reviews on any model you consider buying (use google it is your friend). A bad router will leave you with disconnections and other woes.

To receive the wireless:
The two laptops you mentioned might already have wireless cards inside of them. If they don't then its highly likely they have little slots on the side known as PCMCIA slots. These are expansion ports similar to PCI slots on a desktop. You can buy relatively inexpensive wireless cards for these ports at any retail store. Linksys, Dlink, Netgear, and Belkin are the big names in this industry. Linksys and Netgear have the better reputation but honestly any 802.11g PCMCIA card will do nicely for a home user.

The desktop may need nothing since most wireless routers also let you plug directly into them. If you are certain you will need a wireless card for the desktop then look into ethernet bridges. These are devices that you plug a network cable into and they act as a bridge between your wireless and you're wired network.

These devices have a much better range than a traditional desktop wireless card. They may cost a bit more but actually being able to use your wireless internet may make up for that.
