because when it beeps the sound is on and therefore it is not logical to say it is going off?????????????????????????

because when you set the alarm clock (used to be by winding the spring to power the clockwork bells) you are turning the alarm on. when the alarm activated it would need resetting before it could be used again hence the alarm has gone off.

because when it go beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep lol the owner of the alarm makes sure it goes off .

Omg I ALWAYS wondered that! I used to say to my friends "I'm so sleepy.. my alarm clock went on today at 6 am!" and they would look at me like "wtf? it's off!"
