In it's most simple form,
Merchandising
Advertising
Orginization
Display
MERCHANDISING (Think of a department store)
Software (Clothing, Bedding, Home decorating, Sewing)
Hardware (Appliances, Electronics, Tools)
Every department in these categories is a business of it's own. Every item is considered a business in itself. The assortment must be planned and purchased as basic, every day merchandise, as seasonal merchandise, and specialty items, with consideration for fast changing goods
Think of Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter goods that must be purchased with consideration for the length of the season, plannjng into the season and out.
ADVERTISING
A budget must be planned as a percentage of total sales.
The type of media must be considered and cost, within the budget.
ORGINIZATION
Budgets must be planned for management, sales, shipping and receiving personnel, and any others that may be necessary.
DISPLAY
This too must be carefully planned, with consideration given to "Hot" merchandise, (Priority locations as this changes), best sellers, seasonal goods, and every day basics.
Windows must be used as traffic stoppers, as well as displays in each department, featuring best selling items along the aisles. Aisles are much like a sidewalk and the display must be planned to stop customers, hopefully to initiate impulse buying. To accomplish this the display has less than 30 seconds to attract a customer.
This is pretty brief but every item in a business must be considered a little business of it's own and produce turnover and profit.
Think of kitchen chinaware. Every type of coffee cup, tea cup, is a small business, etc.
