Now I see 20 years later they have modern fighter jets and are attacking Somalia! I cant help feeling my 50p donation helped fuel this war. I hope Gelfof is happy now. Thanks to him, more people are dying, and its all MY fault!

Too bad if this offends the bleeding heart liberals out there. But I think it is a complete waste of time giving money to charities who lose it somewhere in the pockets of greedy African politicians and businessmen. Like you say, these countries now have modern weapons with which to destroy each other.

When the Brits left their African colonies in the 1950s and 1960s, most, if not all, were in good shape economically. Most if not all, were on the downward slide within a single generation. Makes ya wanna scream! Then out comes the begging bowl. Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia, is a case in point - farms producing nothing, mass unemployment, rampaging out of control 150+ inflation. To think, Zimbabwe was one of Africa's richest countries only a decade or so ago.

Any money handed over to African states must be strictly controlled by the World Bank who will ensure that it goes directly into the pockets of the poor and needy and not be handled by any African Government ever.

Its like pouring milk into a bucket with holes in it.

On a far more serious note, 21 years ago 5 million people were on the verge of starving to death, in step Bob (holier than thou) Geldof who gets very angry about this and swears on TV a lot and raises a boatload of cash. Very good Bob - 21 years later theres 10 million people in the same position, what a stroke of genius that was.

Got him a knighthood though, what a hero.

You have just answered the question as to why I will not give to overseas aid charities. Have you seen that 80% of the money given to the Tsunami appeal is still languishing in bank accounts, no doubt earning some fat cat millions in interest, that the Red Cross intended to build 8000 house per year, but in two years have handed over 22, yes, 22 houses? Sorry, charity starts at home. We have enough need here without supporting corrupt regimes. We feed their population so they can fight their wars. I don't think so. Would they do it for us? Would they hell as like.

Au contraire, it was the all the princes men who created the 50p.

Send Somalia to Bob Geldof and they'll have themselves a raging party!

Answerers shall now go hang themselves in shame.

Yes. Perhaps if LiveAid hadn't inervened, there wouldn't have been enough people left alive to fight for the region. Bob Geldof's altruism wasn't misplaced but he couldn't prevent arms sales that fuel the tyrants' wars. The only British industry supported by Thatcher was the arms industry so while we voluntarily gave our pennies to Liveaid, we gave our tax-money unknowingly to buy arms for Africa through the Export Credits Guarantee scheme. It wasn't Bob that conned us.

Exactly the reason I never give to any charity, especially anything to do with pop stars, also Children in Need I never give to. Did you also hear that people are still homeless after the Tsunami because they haven't been given the money that was donated to them (I didn't donate anything to that either). Charity sucks, big con.

Giving money to African countries is like throwing it down the drain. Give an African a fish and he'll eat it and ask for more, give an African a fishing rod and he'll break it, lose it or sell it for an AK47, you can't win, no matter how much you give them or try to help them they always seem to f##k it up.
My father worked in Africa for 18 years trying to help them set up basic medicine factories, all the funds kept getting stolen, the machinery was broken or stolen on a weekly basis. An uphill struggle for 18 years with nothing to show for it.
The same story for much about all the African countries I'm afraid. Sad situation.

Give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day. Give a man a rod and you'll feed him for life.

Send them Bob Geldof and they'll arm themselves to prevent him coming back!
