Sure there is. There are about 15 ways to do it. Those links that other repliant gave are good. I prefer the Linux approach. You can either use a PGP, or some really mad Hash Code and scramble them up before you password them. Any password that somebody other than you can be gotten to and overwritten. This is the fact. If its really secret. learn from the DoD,CIA,NSA, do not put any files on line that are sensitive in nature.
I like the LiveCD approach, it is kinda Linux like, use a CD-RW, make a Folder on it, place your Password Protected Files in that, then access them wherever or with whatever PC you are on. It has a second caveat, if a crash or whatever happens you have that File or set of Files saved because it is a Live Backup.
You are on line, the WWW was intended to SHARE data and information. Not hide and MD5 Checksum it. That stuff is good for when sending data, but if the data is on the HD that has an active Internet Connection, it is as if it were on the public sidewalk. Want your stuff safe. Don't ever put it on line. Will it matter in 50 years, it might. But the fact is it can be owned by anybody this day is the fact that very few seem to accept.
Internet and Security are such a wicked joke that has been displayed to the people. It is like Ferrari building Paddle Wheeler boat. It just is not done.
That little Yellow Lock? Do you have any idea how easy that code is. Look at the Square Root of 3 project, those hackers have been running some pretty nice gear for 3 years now just trying to find the Absolute of the ^3. But they have been working on a problem that was proposed by Archimedes almost 6000 years ago.
If a hacker or a cracker, there is a very big difference, wants to look at any file or folder in a file, they will. That is the nature of the game.
Make a CD-RW, use it as an External Drive, password it or whatever, but that way it is not on that Hard Drive.
That is the only and best answer that I can give to that question. Have Fun!

Come on... all these convoluted answers...

Right click on your desktop and select new>Compressed (Zipped) Folder.

Place any files in this compressed folder you want

Then right click on the compressed folder icon and select Explore

When the windows explorer comes up , go to the file menu and select "Add a password"

All of the files in the folder are now not only compressed, but the folder itself is encrypted using that password. Make sure you remember the password.

Window OS doesnot have a utility to specify password to protect folder.

You can prevent access to other users by setting security setting on your folder.
Select Folder Properties and switch to security tab. Click "Advanced" button on the security tab to control access to folder.
