I've tried to delete it but it does not appear in "add/remove" programs. I remember disableing it via Outlook Express but I can't remember how.

Thanks for any help

It is not in the main window of the add/remove, but in windows components option.
You can also disable it from starting at bootup in
start > run (type msconfig) , press ok > click on startup tab > Locate and uncheck messenger > click ok, click close , click restart> after restart check the box in a window that appears, press ok.

The problem is that if you use outlook it will always launch it no matter how you have it configured. I'm suspecting this is the problem you're having. If not, then just follow the advice already given.

If so, then check out this website for instructions. http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=288
