I have heard people say body kits are lame but I think they can look cool. I want to get a 5th gen Prelude and put one on it, would that be cool or stupid or what

If you fix it up right and actually paint it, it will look very cool. If you do a bad job and leave it unpainted it will look stupid.

Save yourself the trouble man. First, I rthink they're lame, but I'm sure a lot of what I like is lame to others as well. Second, why waste the money? Spend it on a new head-unit or an engine upgrade (nobody likes a car with all show and no go). Also, a lot of them are fragile, so any damages may require some major work or a whole new panel.

Also, I think it's hard to take people seriously with body kits, especially when they nickle and dime it to death...you know:

First the front, then the back, then the sides, then one rim at a time, then the primer for 5 months and then, finally, a paint job. On top of that, what's the advantage? Most of the kits that are affordable are affordable for a reason, and in many cases, modded out imports only look good when a pro drops $20g on it or something, not when a 16 year old drops $350. Besides, chances are good that there are going to be a ton of other Preludes out there with the same kit.

I say...skip it man. It's not worth it.

Well some body kits look cool, some are just lame and ones that don't fit well will always look terrible.

It is all a matter of personal taste.

Take this into consideration.
Does the kit fit the body tightly all the way around or do you have to use lots of body putty to make it look better? The body putty, if put on wrong or too thick will crack after a change in season from the temperature changes.

What are the roads like that you will be driving. Pot holes? Speed bumps? Remember ground clearance. Nothing will make you grit your teeth and get you upset like having a body kit installed and painted then ripping off a lower spoiler due to the road.

Does the body kit allow a tow truck to place a cable to your towhook without hurting the kit? I drive a tow truck and all too ofter these fast and the furious types need to be towed and the body kid is in the way. The cable does a number on the spoiler if it is in the way.

Good luck and also remember, you get what you pay for. Buy a super cheap body kit and it will look super cheap
