but when I start the installation it says:
Checking file and directory permissions..
Directory uploads/ is NOT writable.
Directory cache/ is NOT writable.
Directory templates_c/ is NOT writable.
File mainfile.php is NOT writable.

How can I make them writable?

Why don't you open the site control panel and dump the PHP file in the appropriate directory?

That error means that you did not CHMOD the files to 0777. These instructions are for a freeware FTP program called FileZilla, upload the files, right-click on the files (or directories) in question and change the premissions to 0777 (or 777).

edit: make sure to read the instructions that came with your script as they may want you to change the permissions to something other than 777...
