If you're looking for information that appeared in a newspaper you will have to go to the library and look at either microfilm, microfiche, or bound copies of the old papers. Depending on where you live this information should be available at the largest library in your county or perhaps at a university library.
For other information about deeds, marriages, etc. you might want to contact the Hall of records or City Hall for their records. Some municipalities have better records than others, but all will let you review the past records, especially if you are involved in a particular search and aren't just browsing.

Try contacting your local library. If you're in a larger city, they will most likely have a genealogy section to help guide you on individual items and where in your city to get them. In many counties, you must go to the court house to obtain marriage licenses or deeds, etc. If just looking for newspaper clippings, the library will have alot of them.

Good luck on tracing your ancestors!

Your local newspaper has an archive and I think you can purchase them or copies. I know my area newspaper has an archive. As for centuries ago, I would consult with a librarian. These folks are paid lots of $'s and they love to be of service.
