A married man who begs his friend,
A bachelour, to wed and end
His lonesome, sorry state,
Is like a bather in the sea,
Goose-pimpled, blue from neck to knee,
Who cries, "The Waters's Great"!

The general theme is sarcasm and irony. It's about someone who's suffering, and inviting someone else to suffer by explaining how great it is to suffer.

The theme, I'd say, is "The destructive aspect of marriage."

That is, the married man is like a person abandoned at sea telling someone else that the water is fine - when it obviously is not. The water (marriage) has left the man "lonesome," "sorry," "goose-pimpled," and "blue."

It was nice of you to make me smile :o). I would say that the theme would be that misery loves company. I would also like to overthink it and say that although the water is frigid, there is an underlying goodness to it. Like marriage, nothing is perfect but the bonds are worth the tribulations.

Sounds like 2 guys that are friends; on married and the other single. The single guy likes being single but is depressed about it as well.

the wording almost sounds like John Donne but I am not familiar with the poem you posted. Check out "The Indifferent" by Donne.

It's a funny way of saying that the married man is in misery and wants his friend to join him by getting married...I had to smile....

would seem the theme of the poem is that marriage is something to be avoided. can't say i agree, but it's someone's point of view so there you are.
