combination of alcohol and lights, but also it's a place where there is plenty of movement of people and they can be seen. You will notice that when someone passes by, they will 'puff up' and swagger a bit ... the Spar customers are the only audience they get. Sad but true.

The ones where i live hang outside, blockbuster (which happens to be opposite an off license!!!)
I think its a mix of finding someone who will buy them alcohol, or one of their mates works in there or they know they are intimidating and its a place which is frequented by people, oh and one more - because.they.are.cool.
Me, i find them amusing and if they tend to say anything to me, i give them my 'ohmygodyoursoembarrasing' look or say something like 'sorry i cant understand anyone with the IQ below that of a lettuce' they're not intelligent enough to think of something to throw back quick enough.
ohh they make me laugh, bless em

They like to congregate where there is light so they can see each other. This often puts them in the way of other people but I don't think they intend to be intimidating, just young and thoughtless. If you ask politely to pass, there's never a problem.

Yes, Spar is relatively cheap, open late, all lit up. Ideal place to gather when you're young and have nothing to do... The draw of alcohol is a factor as well, I agree.

It happens to me where I live. They try and ask people to buy alcohol for them which on the Spar shop shows a big sign that if you are caught purchasing alcohol for under-agers, you can be fined up to 1000.00. If they ask me, I show them the sign and tell them NO. I just hope when I come back out, my car tyres are not punctured.

because they have parent who do not set boundaries or couldnt care less what their children are doing
because the police have no power to deal with them
because the shopkeepers who sell them the drinks only think about the money going into their till or are scared of what will happen to thier business if they refuse to serve them
because they have all the power - and they know it

If you think about it they do not have many places to go, we had youth clubs but there are not many of them left now, I agree that it is intimidating but we probably should be asking how to tackle the issue rather than what to call them.

We are all advised to stick to well-lit public areas in order to avoid being attacked. The yobs go there too because thet is where their victims will be.

I find that very often they are trying to find someone to get cigarettes and/or alcohol for them because they are too young to be served

moths to a light...someone told me the way to cure this kind of gathering is to play classical music , and pipe it to the front of store,, this apparently isn,t cool,
unless its outside the Royal accadamy of music, then they all join in
