BC people who say such things may not consciously be aware, or willing to admit, that they are, indeed, racist and so it gives them great comfort to make their excuses for themselves in advance. But, nobody of conscience or intelligence is fooled.
Ditto for: Some of my best friends....

Poms have protested against being called Poms down under, if you are not racist why do you accept being a pom?
The human being is naturally racist but most dont understand what being racist means so they deny being racist.
I am of mixed racial background and do not have that feeling of "belonging" (being racist) like you do, so you too are not racist but you have delivered a racist rant, and dont realise it.
it's not just a question of black and white as you think, pommy.

everybodys racist or at least 95% of the time people think they arent it makes no difference from being .5% racist to 98% racist its all the same sometimes people cant help it. it is what makes us human and if you believe your 100% non racist than your are 100% not human.

Its because they feel guilty about it. They do not want people to view them as racist, although a racist comment is about to come out of there mouth!!!

sorry my dear but everybody has some form of racial bias. most of the time we are not even aware of this feeling inside of us. some people however take it to extremes and let their fear and hate take control of their lives. the rest of us try to accept that we do not like certain people and do our best to overcome these feelings through education or acceptance. as a people we are more likely to follow in our parents footsteps even when we know it is wrong so we have to make ourselves aware of this and take the time to understand why and how we can correct it rather than continue the cycle

You are so right. Probably because they have a guilty conscious somewhere down under but could not help it.

Most prejudiced people are convinced that they are not prejudiced. "I'm not a racist, but..." is just another example of introducing biassed opionion by statingh one is not biassed: "I don't have anything against gays/catholics/old people....: some of my best friends are gays/catholics/old people, buuut...."
