Alcohol numbs neurons in the brain, causing a "floating" feeling, followed by slurred speech, staggering, and possibly falling down.... Being relaxed by alcohol is what keeps drunk drivers from dying in car crashes.

Basically what everyone already said. It basically sedates your medulla oblongata, which is the hub of your nervous system. It's the part that tells your body "don't do that cuz it's embarrassing!" or "don't do that cuz you'll feel guilty afterwards!" and other messages to that effect. It numbs this part, and essentially allows you to do what you would do if you had lessened inhibitions. In a sense, it kind of tells you what kind of person you'd wanna be if you didn't care what others thought.

Because alcohol is a sedative which numb your brain.
However... you only forget because your problems are not major.
Alcohol will make things worse if you have big problems and you will become violent towards other people. If you are depress... it can drive you to suicide.
