As you can determine by the posts responding to your question, your feeling would be the result of whom you came in contact. There are optimists and pessimists globally. Should you run into a pessimistic American, you would come away with the same attitude as the pessimists who responded to your question. Meet an optimist and you would find things to be very encouraging.

Well, other the being the most vainest country, the most obese country, the country nobody likes, the country that started the war with iraq, the country with the most crime.... then yeah! I find it encouraging!

No not really. I see some americans on tv yelling catchcrys to motivate people. Does it work? I don't think so.
