well i've had my bgk for about a month now and he seems to be doin fine the past two days during the night i have noticed some odd behavior he will hover above my largest plant in the tank and then he swims right into the base of the plant and just hangs inside of there after he eats and he stays there until morning when i turn the lights on i was wondering if this was wrong or if he just really likes it in there. i was also wondering if anyone knows a great place to find how to make a perfect habitat for the bgk and i was also wondering if lunar lights would be a good investment

Thanks,
Zach

BGKs are by nature reclusive and look for narrow, enclosed places to hang out when they're not looking for food. Most aquarium supply stores sell "ghost tubes" which are transparent tubes that your ghost can feel secure in but you can still see him.

And, if you choose to buy him a buddy, just remember your BGK is a predator which can grow over a foot long and will always see anything even a little smaller than he is as a snack. ;)

Nice animal, the black ghost. I've had several over the years and they each developed their own interesting habits. I suspect though that they were all reacting to their instincts in conjunction with their environment. I would say the behavior yours is displaying is perfectly natural and right for the individual. As the other have mentioned, the black ghost desires a place to feel safe, whether it is a plastic tunnel, constructed cave, or plants planted to invite them in.

The black knife fish likes to hide. They make special tubes for them to hide in that are clear so you can view them. As for a habitat for them they love narrow openings where they can feel safe and secure so you's probably want to put alot of plants in your tank and tube type decoration or long narrow decorations. Your tank mates should be larger than your knife fish because they are hunters and will kill smaller fish very easily. I have a pair of knife fish in my tank with an arrowanna and they seem to do just fine. Just rememember that the arrowanna will get very large so choose the tank mates for the size of your tank.
