Paul McCartney is the richest musician. Buffet has made his money in his restaurant and his book Buffet might be worth more but he didn't do it with his music as much as in diversifying into shirts, books, food and restaurants.
McCartney has made his fortune in music.

The composer Andrew Lloyd Webber is worth an estimated 500 million dollars, but Paul McCartney is worth even more - an estimated 585 million dollars. Andrew Lloyd Webber may have edged him out by now though from the royalties on all his musicals - the statistic I have is not recent for him.
Afterthought: Jimmy Buffet might be right - he is worth an estimated billion dollars. Thanks previous poster!
