Why is when certain people criticize music they say things like rap isn't music, instead of like other certain people like me who say things like Rock or country isn't my preference instead of it's not real music. Why can't people accept the difference of preferences no matter who you are and what you feel when the music moves your whether it's rap, country, rock, alternative.

I don't like the rap music today. Bring back the days of Whodini, Grandmaster Flash, Kool Moe Dee, Big Daddy Kane, Dougie Fresh, etc. That was rap!! It was all about having fun.
These days it's all sampled, not much originality anymore and lots of vulgar sex and violence, therefore it no longer moves me. And it's not because I'm that old. I'm only in my early 30's yet I still remember very clearly how it used to be.

There are a number of reasons why people typically tend to say that they do not like rap music. Not all of these reasons are related to music. Many of them are related to the music videos that are produced for the songs. For example, in some videos, parents may fear that a particular scene is making a gun look cool; therefore, they may be afraid that their children may think that it is cool to have a gun in the same way that children of the 80s thought it was cool to wear Thriller jackets after Michael Jackson's video "Thriller" came out. The difference is that guns are dangerous, can go off accidentally, and can be used to hurt others. The child, who obviously would not know how to use or control a gun and should have no business holding one, might find their way to get one and carry it to school to be cool like the people in the videos. This is just one example. Rappers tend to glamorize violence and, especially, sex. Keep in mind that it doesn't have to do with the race of the musicians in the video. The issue is that children tend to pay attention and become what they see on TV. For example, Paris Hilton may carry a pink purse with her everywhere she goes and now all of the teen girls are carrying pink purses. So, children (regardless of their age) tend to believe and follow what they see on TV. Have you ever heard the saying that "you are what you eat" or "you've spent so much time with that person that you are turning into them"? Well, this the same idea with rap videos. Now, I'm not saying that all videos are perfect except for rap, but, historically, it is shown that rap videos do show a rougher, street-wise, and almost gang-related type of feel to their videos that are then transferred over to the young minds of today. It doesn't matter if the person rapping is talking about family values if they are dressed in rough street attire, holding a gun, standing by two barely-dressed women, and perhaps a cigarette or drug in their hands. It's all about the "message" that is perceived or indirectly or subconsciously absorbed by their children and parents probably do not want their children getting the wrong ideas and learning bad habits that turn into serious problems later in their lives so they say that they don't like the music and they do not allow it in their house, etc. But it has nothing to do with whether or not the rap song is "music" or not. If it has a beat, has lyrics, has a chorus, etc., then it makes up the physiology of a "song" and therefore is considered "music". Of course, the above reason is just one example. I'm sure that parents and other people could give many other examples that would also support a similar response. I agree that there are some aspects of country music and rock & roll that are not all that positive but, through what the public has perceived as being the history of rap music, there have been more incidents that have occurred as a result of rap than there has been of the other types of music. I hope this helps. With that being said, on the other hand, some people just simply don't prefer rap music and it's that simple. It has nothing to do with anything other than they just don't care for it. It's a personal preference. I personally don't care for Opera but that doesn't make it less than it is. I just don't care for it. I think it's a personal preference and that's just the way people think about it, but there is a history with rap music that, as explained above, concerns a number of parents and that is probably where some of the criticisms come from.

I used to listen to rap when I was 14-16 but then I woke up and realized that rap is a degrading degenerate minstrel show and has done nothing but damage the black image and worsen race relations. I'm 20 and I don't know many people older than me that still think rap is cool. Listen to REAL black music- jive/old-school jazz/swing, soul, R&B, spirituals, boogie, even rock and country have black roots. Our ancestors had stronger morals and integrity than that and would be shocked to see how low our moral standards have fallen.

I'm down with the old-school guys like Run DMC and Sugarhill Gang though;-)

Because a lot of the Rap music that I've heard is racist, anti-Semitic,misogynistic,..it also seems to place value on murder, white slavery, drug peddling, pimping(the real meaning..not the pretend one),and nihilistic behavior in general. It glorifies the stupid gang banger 10% of the black community to the detriment of the 90% of the black community that is hard-working, law abiding, and honest. But the absolute worst thing is this...it makes white trash kids from Iowa dress and talk like they are from Compton.

Some people has no telerance, that's all. These people are called ETHNOCENTRIC simply because they think and believe that who they are and what they like is the only thing in this world. The reason RAP is reered to as not being music is because rap has only three notes, RAP ismore of a poetry for some.
But in anycase of what other people say about your choice of music, do not worry them too much, they are just bein ETHNOCENTRIC and IGNORANT.

Because, generally speaking, country, rock, alternative etc. music does not express rape, killling, abuse, hate, bodily harm, devalue towards women etc as rap does. It's not the sound of the ' music ', it the content of the words expressed.

i don't like most current rap because it's too negative. plus i dislike any song made out of the "bones" of a classic, and rap artists have a tendency to overuse this technique

Hip hop, rap, is ubiquitous. It's listened to in rich suburbs where the kids who listen to it imagine that they are gangstas.
I don't get it, but I agree, it's not my preference. It's a free country. Listen to what you want.

As you know, rap is largely associated with African Americans, and many White Americans are very racist against our ethnic group.

So, instead of just saying that they don't like rap music, they have to get racial, and say it's "not music".

I don't like classical music, but I don't say that it's "not music" I just say that I don't like it - why can't rap's critics say the same thing about that genre of music?

Obviously, it's because they have a racial bias against African American culture.
