Slavery had nothing to do with racism. That was a matter of greed, laziness, and society standing. The lynchings were just a part of the white mans attempt to instill fear in the brothers and keep them under control. As time went on and we as a people became more powerful whites feared that power and the physical attacks and political advents were set in place to try and keep us down. That's why the 60's were so prominent as the battle years because of the achievements through the works of our civil rights leaders and southern whites were determined to keep things as they had been giving the African man nothing. It's all about power and control. The whites invaded this country and took it over from the Natives and think it truly belongs to them and no other ethnic group has the same rights as they did. The constitution and bill of rights were not inclusive for those of African descent and even today there are neighborhoods that will not allow African descent people to live there because it will "lower the property value". That's how it is and always will be.

Why are you worrying about what they were if this generation is not about enslavement and lynching. Let it go. Why go digging up bones. There's better ways to celebrate your rich history and progress and to encourage more progress. As a Christian I don't dwell on what I was but what I am now by the grace of God. Christians make up the majority of this country and it was a good praying white man called Abraham Lincoln who went down in history for reuniting this nation and freeing the slaves. Aren't you glad the North sacrificed for your freedom and equality? Now you've got it so leave the past behind and enjoy the blessings of the present.

Hi there.

I am a white South African born in 1986, just before Apartheid was uplifted. I do not think whites were then, nor now really racists. I think that it is a case of so called 'educated' people thinking they could take advantaged of the less privileged people.

You will notice that throughout history the 'upper class' misused people that were not on their level. It had noting to do with colour.

That still didn't justify the things that happened in the passed! Luckily the blacks in SA are now getting the same respect and opportunities as all the other races.

Good Lord! Are we back on this again? How many times do we have to tell people that we are not responsible for the actions of our ancestors?!?! How many ways can we say sorry for negative feelings that I never had about you or the fact that my ancestors may or may not have had slaves? It's ancient freakin history. Let it die! As long as we keep dredging this sad, sick history up it will remain alive and well and grow hate in the hearts of Blacks everywhere. I can't change the past. I'm sorry your ancestors were slaves. I'm sorry White people treated them badly. I don't think of myself any more highly than any other race. If anything Whites are now experiencing reverse racism because Black families keep handing down through the generations how terrible White people are for what they did to them. We cannot heal as a nation until we can let this issue go. It's over and done with. You have all your rights and all the freedoms this nation affords. Use them. Enjoy them. Make a great life for yourself. But until you can let go of the past and forgive injustices you will never be successful. I'm here only by the grace of God. You're here only by the grace of God. Let's make the best of it and live in peace, shall we?

Culture. Back when slavery was accepted, like cell phones while driving, then yes, its ok. But even though I don't accept what my ancestors may have done (mine came from Germany, I'm not sure what they did there before WWI), I think it is sad that any human be treated like that. The worse part is that slavery is all throughout humanity, not just "whites". Throughout history, the conquering army made slaves out of the women and children of the defeated army.

I'm not sure if it's humanity back then making people do what they themselves don't want to, or now, making low paying jobs for domestic services, or anything else people don't want to do.

Our culture has changed and there are actually a lot of advantages for being a "minority" now today, like colleges, jobs, housing, etc.

To my knowledge, the slaves that came from Africa were SOLD by their OWN people. Unfortunate, but true! Almost every nationality has been enslaved at one time or another. My ancestors were Jewish, they were slaves! But we must move past this. We, as Children of God must come together to heal ALL wounds of our FOREFATHERS! People need to stop dwelling on the past and worry about what is happening in our world TODAY! There are enough WRONGS going on right NOW! Shouldn't we focus on THOSE, since WE can't change what ALL READY happened....Please, let's talk about things we can do something about! I am truly sorry if this offends anyone, however we are HUMAN! EVERYONE makes mistakes!

And, why is it ALL "white" people are RACIST? But not all "black"people are? Seems like "Black" people are more racists towards themselves. I can't remember the last time I heard a "white" person speak about a "black" person like they speak about each other. You all know what I am referring to. Why is it that "black" people think it's OK for them to call each other names? I don't believe it is right for ANYONE, regardless of color of skin to be derogatory in any manner to another!

Wish there was something I could do to make it all right. But, unfortunately, there isn't. We just need to learn to LOVE ourselves and each other...The way GOD loves us.....Can't we all just get along?

the beginnings of black slavery had more to do with tribal wars than anything, and they sold those they didnt want to feed to other places. egypt and so on then finally they found a new market with the white farmers who didnt want to have to pay for labor, believe me everyone will take the easy route if they can, and lynching was about keeping your paid for farm animals, yes human animals and they thought if they sacrificed a few to the rope the others would stay put, its not a pretty idea, but we were far from the first to hold blacks as slaves, and it didnt start with blacks either. look at jews in egypt too. it has always been since someone thought they were better than someone else by any sort of reasoning. the irish were treated like crap too, and came here as bond servants and many died in servitude to other white americans. you arent the only race that had it bad. wake up. the chinese were treated terribly here when they were builiding the transcontinental railroad on their labor as well. life is never fair.

We have no control over who we were born to. I believe that some whites were and still are racist, which is one of the stupidest things to be (and to anyone reading this that happens to be one... eff you.)

I live in supposedly the most backwards and racist state in the US, Mississippi, and have several friends that are black and Vietnamese. It's not possible to live a good life in America if you are racist of any group. There are too many people that aren't white here.

Don't group all of us together. To me you are a human being with thoughts, feelings, troubles, triumphs, and a life just like any other human being. You just have more melanin in your body than a white person. Nothing more.

If you're talking about slavery in America, enslavement was a labor issue. Owning slaves didn't necessarily mean the slave owners were racist; they just wanted cheap labor.

Lynching, on the other hand, was certainly a racist activity performed by ignorant people that feared other cultures.

Just for your information. Blacks have slaves that are black and white and execute them if it suits their owners. Whites have slaves. As a matter of fact, I can't think of any species that hasn't had or have slaves, even today!

It is the feeling of power that one gets from having control over someones life. We even see it in marriage today. It is written in history books, and told of in stories, today's news, etc. It has been given several other names, but it still exists in modern day, as it has throughout history.

So why can't blacks get off their soap boxes? I appreciate being around people with education, and try to bring their families up to a better standard. BUT, many blacks, browns, reds, yellows, and whites are lazy, and had rather do nothing to better their lives than complain about life of 100 plus years ago!

Slavery exists today! Try the sweat shops for illegal immigrants.

OK call me racist if you like! (I don't consider myself one.) But answer me this. What race is the majority in jail? What race is the majority on welfare? If you want to use population figures then blacks and Hispanics are. If you want to consider one very important factor (i.e, Laziness) then you can count whites as the greatest.

So in conclusion, skin color has nothing to do with being a racist. Education does!!!!!

I'll probably get massacered for voicing my thoughts and opinions. So be it. That is the privlidge I have from the Constitution of the U.S.A.
