not very long ago, the u.s. used military power routinely to stifle the progress of DEMOCRATIZED socialism. today, are we telling folks they cannot choose to have islamic law? obviously, the somalis prefer the ICU to the UN government. even if the western press they do not claim otherwise. when have you ever read a single story where it said the people of somali preferred the UN government? they do not tell you the people prefer the islamists, but the absence of any mention on the subject at all is ridiculously obvious. for a year you have discussed somalia in your papers everyday. never once does a single story tell you what most somali's want? you don't ask or expect much from your media do you?

Mark G, you as sadly mistaken. First, you should known their name: The Union of Islamic Courts (not churches). Second, they never executed anyone for not making salat, nor did they execute anyone for being Christian. Both would violate Islamic law, a bit of a leap for an Islamic court. Give me one example of one of these incidents. I beg you.

Second, they did not say they wanted to take all of Northern Africa. North Africa is a big place. What they said was that they wanted to create a greater Somalia, possibly including ethnically Somali areas inside Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti. There's a pretty big difference there.

Also, I think you should brush up on your use of the simple past and past progressive.

And to Rich A, when was the government in Baidoa ever elcted by the Somali people. They were instated, not elected, by the UN. Since when does the UN act as a replacement for the Somali people?

By the way, does Christian Wolfe sound like a Somali to you. Think before you write.

Islamic extremists are out to overthrow a democratic, popularly elected government. The ICU, again, has no concern for the many who are suffering and who are without food. The UN has actually been trying to airlift food staples into areas, but have been prevented from doing so because of the conflict. You should thank the UN and the USA for years of aid since you obviously have no desire or ability to help your own people. If don't like our western press or means of communication, or our way of life, or our culture, don't use what you dislike or mistrust as your only means to spread your rebellious intentions. Frankly, we all know Somalia's past at harboring Islamic terrorists. Your history for democratic ideals are skeptical at best. Now, you're trying to overthrow your own government. But then again, what else is new?

First I want you to find a single paper anywhere that went to Somalia and took a poll of what the people preferred.Without a free vote no one knows. The reason Ethiopia is involved is because the Islamic Council of Church's ( the name the Islamic rebels use in Somalia) was executed anyone in Somalia that they found was not praying five times a day or was a Christian. They also stated their intention was to take control over all of Northern Africa and Ethiopia felt they were a threat to them also.
