I am currently working temporarily at a well-known thumbdrive company in Singapore. I have customers asking me if it possible to make a thumbdrive bootable, i.e. to make the computer startup from the thumbdrive itself. Since I'm pretty new at work, I'm not too sure how to go about doing it. So since I'm also encouraged to take the initiative to ask around, I turned to Yahoo! Answers. Kindly advise. Thanks!

Its for advance users. Like the earlier poster says, you have to set your bios to boot from USB drive. You also need to install a small linux OS or old Microsoft DOS software. This is not your job. Just sell them the highest capacity thumbdrive and tell them it can be done.

Though I have never done it myself before, i do believe that it is possible to boot from a thumbdrive. But in order to do so your BIOS needs to have the option to boot from a USB compatable device. Your thumbdrive would probably also need to be specifically formatted and setup to be used as a boot device

As of now, I don't think USB devices are bootable...but that is something of keen interest. Once floppy drives disappear, it would be prudent to have another bootable medium (besides the CD-ROM).
