Did my eyes deceive me two Sunday nights ago? Did I witness the New Orleans Saints' blister the mighty, five-time Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys, in a key NFC showdown in Big D? If so, you must be thinking what I'm thinking, this Saints team must headed for something great.
Now, I admit the NFL season is a 16-week grind, but with three weeks left in the regular season, there's no team in the NFC -- sorry Chicago Bears fans -- that's playing better and is more dangerous than the New Orleans Saints.
The Saints' 42-point performance Sunday night against a good Cowboys defense showed their offense is arguably the best in the NFC, if not the entire NFL. That's what happens when you have a quarterback like a Drew Brees, who's having a season most quarterbacks dream, but don't experience in their career. Brees would be a lock for the league's Most Valuable Player, if not for the season his former teammate, LaDainian Tomlinson, is having in San Diego.
Brees' five touchdown game and his eighth 300-yard game in 13 games, looked easy the other night in Dallas. Sure, it helps him when he has a Reggie Bush, a Deuce McAlister and a Marques Colston at his disposal, but Brees' performance was typical of the type season he has had in New Orleans.
With Brees obviously playing as well as anyone in the NFL, coupled with a defense that's gotten better and better each week -- plus an exciting head coach in Sean Payton -- the Saints have all the ingredients to win the NFC, which doesn't have many good teams, anyway.
The Bears are mathematically the best team in the NFC right now and should get home-field advantage, albeit thanks to a ridiculously easy schedule. However, Chicago has shown some vulnerability over the past few weeks with the struggles of quarterback Rex Grossman and season-ending injuries to defensive standouts Mike Brown and Tommie Harris.
The Saints should get the second seed, which means a bye and a playoff game at home against a team like a Seattle or a Dallas, who neither can win in New Orleans. That should leave a Chicago-New Orleans game for the NFC Championship.
The Bears would be favored simply because of home-field advantage, but when things are broken down in match-ups, the Saints would have a legitimate shot to win.
That's a thought no one has ever expressed about the Saints. I know there's plenty more ahead for the Saints this season, but nothing would be nicer than to see these thoughts come true.

Not if the Bears decide to get their **** 2gether, or what if the Eagles continue to play at the level they have been playing at, or maybe the Cowboys decide to use the massive amount of talent on their team. Or maybe none of this happens and the Saints do make the superbowl, either way I HIGHLY doubt anyone from the NFC is gonna be within 17 points of winning the Superbowl against a MUCH MUCH better AFC.

It doesn't take much to make it to the superbowl from the NFC. Then anything can happen. And who the hell said that San Diego are a lock for the superbowl? Last year the colts were the favourites and didn't even make it. Everyone should just calm the **** down.

Nope. First they have to get by chicago, and if they cant get their defense back together, they wont have a chance. But, even if they do get by chicago on the road, they cant beat san diego or the ravens. Remember what happen when the saints played the ravens. Reggie bush: 5 for 16 yards, 4 receptions for 5 yards and a int.

I would love to see that happen. They look like a real contender in the playoffs to me. If they do win the NFC (probably by beating the Bears in Chicago), you have to give them an excellent chance in the SB. A matchup against SD would be very interesting for Drew Brees. That would be some game to watch. The Saints have really developed a national fan base this year and since they have never been to the SB, I for one would love to see them get there and win it.

My prediction is Chargers 38, Saints 17. I think San Diego can defend against Brees and nobody can stop Tomlinson. Philip Rivers has been a very pleasant surprise this year.

I honestly think they have a good shot if Reggie Bush doesn't get hurt. It honestly wouldn't surprise me either. I don't think they will win, but i think they will make it. They have a strong team, and are my surprise team of the NFL this year.

I sure hope so. I didn't get a Deuce jersey to sit and watch them lose!
They should have gotten rid of Brooks and Haslett (sp?) a looooooong time ago.

They will make a strong run deep into the playoffs, but won't win it this year but next year they will.

I don't think they have a chance. They've been a nice surprise this season, but let's not go nuts.
