Read The Last Vampire series (1-6) by Christopher Pike! He is such an amazing author and this series is one of his best works! I read twilight too and just started new moon today!

I second the nominations for Stephen Spruill, Laurel K. Hamilton and Kim Harrison.
Spruill has 3 - Rulers of Darkness, Daughter of Darkness and Lords of Light. I love these books!
My all-time faves are by Charlaine Harris. I can't recommend these highly enough. It was all I could do not to turn on the caps while typing this paragraph.
Lori Handeland (actually more werewolf but still excellent). Lyndsay Sands (they're piffle but amusing). Mary Janice Davidson (even more pifflier, but also amusing).
Sunshine by Robin McKinley. She had BETTER write a sequel!

The Historian by Elisabeth Kosova is good. It is about vampires, and also gives a bit of history on Vlad the Impaler, the man that the vampire legend is based upon.
I also totally agree with the perosn who said Salems Lot by Stephen King... it is an excellent book.

Anne Rice is the queen of vampire authors, but you might also like Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan series or the early ones in Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series, the later ones really have deteriorated in quality, unfortunately.

One of my favourites is a series by Michael Romkey.
He writes about vampires in a very unique and interesting way. The books can be read in a series or on their own.

Anne Rice's books are good, and I also like the Saint Germaine books by Chelsea Quinn Yarbrough.
