If you're determined to become a film (or television) actor, then naturally it makes sense to watch other actors' work in the medium. But, I'd suggest that you need to do more than just "watch" them; you need to watch them with a keen critical eye, and you need to develop the capacity to discern the actors' TECHNIQUE behind the performance. You have to be able to tell with precision what it is they're doing that makes their work effective.

Yes definetly....Its like the first step to improve ur acting skills...........Many programs and shows which are in search of actors and actresses select them on the basis of their acting skill,in which they are given a taskto act a particular scene of a movie...Then after acting they compare it with the original if they have done a good and a fair job they are selected...In india together with acting dance is also considered as part of acting

If you have had some education, training and experience in acting watching live plays or movies will give you examples you can critique.
You can use those critiques to improve your own acting skills.
So your answer is yes--if you prepare by learning about what you are watching.

I think it would give a great insight into character development. I also think it would be very helpful in learning what works and doesn't work as an actor. I think you should concentrate more on independent films because most main stream movies nowadays depend more on celebrity status and special effects rather than talented acting performances.

I don't think it can hurt your acting skills.
Personally, I think the theater is a better place to learn. Movies are cut and paste so you only get the best scenes. To see how an actor reacts to situations on stage is a much better lesson.

in addition to other exercises, I am sure it does. But watching movies alone...mmm....not really. Kind of like watching someone else play the piano or the violin...you won't improve unless you practice.
