My cousin was pretty drunk, and would not leave the party until he found his "shoe" which was apparently his hat. He kept grabbing his foot, which was missing a shoe, but kept insisting that he was only missing his hat.

I once did this myself , I was at a party with about 10 others and we had all taken our shoes off by the door so as not to track mud on a clean carpet . I was pretty drunk as was everyone else . I found someone else had the same kind of shoes as I when ready to leave . I grabbed what I thought were my pair and put them on and proceeded to tie them . As it turned out I had grabbed the other guys shoes and they were very tight with bad laces . I broke both of his shoelaces putting on his shoes before I realized the other pair was my shoes . Alone I just switched shoes and was ready to leave and the other guy decided to leave also . He picked up his shoes and found both of his shoelaces broken and couldn't figure out what happened . I left quickly before he seen I had the same type and could put 2 and 2 together .

Jump in a pool fully clothed and once in then proceed to take off clothes like it would make a difference.
