I don't think there's a number that high.

Seriously, they are everywhere. In just about every city and town I visited, there were vending machines on nearly every block selling everything from cold drinks, to hot fried snacks, to batteries. I saw sake vending machines, beer vending machines, vending machines for ice cream, cigarette vending machines, and vending machines that served both hot and iced coffee. You can really get just about anything you need.

Will have to say that it was kind of nice to have things so readily available. When I was out sightseeing and found my energy starting to flag, it was great to be able to just toss back a can of iced coffee and keep going. I became so addicted to it that I started to refer to it as "liquid crack".

Didn't see the fabled pornography vending machine, though.

Don't bother counting, there are countless of vending machines in japan.
These vending machines either sell cigarettes, bottled drinks, canned drinks, or food, even umbrellas etc.
So don't bother counting, just count the categories of stuff that can be bought from a vending machine, that will do.

There is no way to even count all of them. I enjoyed buying stuff from a vending machine on the top of Mt. Fuji when I climbed it back in 2003. No joke. They are everywhere.

They are multiplying. Yeah.
Sooner or later the Japanese population will be out numbered by the vending machines and there will be a revolt.
We will have to fight them back by tipping them over or taking them apart with screwdrivers!!

Millions-I have heard it said that they consume the equivalent of one nuclear reactors electricity output. I once discovered one that dispensed beer at the 110 yen soft drink price-Lucky!
