Surprised the crap out of me, too. But he found a way around it being caused by global warming. He had the Interior department announce it rather than EPA. That makes it look more like overpopulation on the Alaska North Slope is killing them off. So since there are too many for their environment, he will use that argument to drill for oil there. If they are already dying off on their own, them he & the oil companies can't be blamed for killing them off, can they.
HEY! I didn't say the man made sense.

Well, I'm Independent. I lean a little more to the conservative side of things. And one thing that I cannot deny is that global warming does exist! We are literaly destroying our environment. And if we do not do anything soon. We will end up like the planet Venus! A permanent green house effect. And life will no longer exist on earth! All species on this planet deserves a chance! A Christian cannot deny that God put ALL Animals on this Earth for a reason! And the reason was not for us to wipe them out! The reason was to balance out nature and some are to provide us food. I am part cherokee Indian. And I think that Naitive Americans know more than anyone about how much our environment has been suffering for the past 60 years!

Bush admitted this a while back- see the reference below.
Not much the USA or anyone can do about global warming however. With India and China just getting industrialized and developed and using mostly coal to do it, there is not a whole lot the rest of the world can do.
Kyoto was never worth killing the trees it was printed on, and everyone who signed it knew it. They did it because it was politically popular and would help keep them in power.
Bashing the US is politically popular in environmental circles, but if people actually cared about the environment, the attention should be focussed on India and China- there are over a billion people there, and many of them want a western (energy rich) lifestyle.

No...Global warming does not exist. Why don't you do a little research? Did you know that it is colder now than it was 200 years ago and that the glaciers are actually getting thicker? Before listening to people like Al Gore telling people that ciggarette smoke is a "huge contributor" to the global warming actually look at the data. Like for instance:
From 1986 to 2000 central Antarctic valleys cooled .7º C per decade with serious ecosystem damage from cold.(1)
and
Antarctic peninsula has warmed several degrees while interior has cooled somewhat. Ice shelves have retreated but sea ice has increased.(2)

Bush is shopping for a Legacy that isn't totally negative. This will NOT be an easy sell.
Too damn little too damn late. Wish he cared as much about the rapidly becoming extinct Military of the United States.
He doesn't care that our Nation's young are dying for no damn reason, and he doesn't give a rodents backside about the Polar Bear. He is simply trying to manipulate History.

woe - thats big news - did they use the word "global warming" though? or did they just say their numbers have dwindled like the eagle or whatever... and "we dont know why" --- the scary thing is... humans will be on the endangered species list in 100 years.
--- oh here... of course they avoided the words "global warming"

I thought their numbers were diminishing because of pollution which affects their food source.....but global warming will become an issue if it isn't already. I worry about the penguins too.
