Is she still alive? Did she ever try to come back after he made it?

From what I have read:
They did get back together for a brief period of time, and even concieved another child. No sure if they are together now or not. Thandie Newton (who played his wife in the movie) did her own personal research to prepare for the role, and stated this in an interview. The wife did not want to have anything to do with the movie though.

Actually, the woman portrayed in the movie as his wife with his son actually was a work of fiction. The truth is that he cheated on his wife with a neighbor. His actual wife had miscarried and could not have more kids. He left his wife for the mistress. Then he and the mistress had two kids together. They never married. So that part of the movie was kind of a twist of truth and fiction.

She couldn't handle being poor anymore and she leaves him and their son. She was their support for several years while he tried to sale medical equipment,

thats a really good question! in the movie she left him and went to work in a resturant in new york...thats all it says though.
