Most broadband connections ARE always on unless you are turnin your modem off!

Broadband whether cable or dsl are always on and never turn off like dial-up. If you turn off the modem then of course the connection is broken. For that reason you need a firewall to protect you from daily hacks. I recommend zone alarm as your software firewall and a router as your hardware firewall. Get advice from your provider on how to set it up. Switch to Mozilla's Firefox, to avoid the vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer (even 7.0). Firefox prevents spyware and IE does not.

Broadband connections, both DSL and Cable are always on by design, as long as the modem and computer have power and the right credentials are given. Otherwise, it will depend on your provider to help you set any timeouts in the modem. Sorry there is no general answer.

in windows xp , go to control pannel, then open network connections, and add new connection, there u can select add a conection, 'conect to interet', then select 'conection that is always open'
