President Richard Nixon was running for re-election in the 1972 election. He really wanted to win, and some others really wanted him to win. Some of those guys who wanted him to win broke into the offices connected with his opponent to steal material that would essentially help them "cheat" with information in order to win the election. Well they got caught, and people wondered if Pres. Nixon had anything to do with it or if he knew about it. Pres. Nixon pretended like he had nothing to do with it and that's what he told the country. But he did know about it, and when everyone figured out he knew and lied, he resigned. The burglars broke into offices inside the Watergate Hotel, which is why it became known as the Watergate Scandal. That's the short and generalized version. :-)

If you can find the movie, All the President's Men, you will get a much better idea of what actually happened than anyone can give you here. It's a great movie with Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford playing Bernstein and Woodward, the reporters that leaked the critical data that was used to raise enough suspicion that Congressional hearings were held investigating the Nixon White House. What came out of these hearings was basically several incidents of "conduct unbecoming" a President of the United States. Nixon and his staff broke several laws to ensure that he would win re-election in 1972. It was all very sleazy and despicable. The American public was naive enough at the time that it became a horrendous scandal. Nixon had to leave office in disgrace and Gerald Ford became President, August 9, 1974.

It was when a few of Richard Nixon's campaign officials were caught raiding democratic headquarters in the Watergate Hotel. It led to a huge scandal that exposed many underhanded dealings that Nixon was involved in. It led to Nixon eventually resigning and many of his workers/advisers leaving and getting fired and some were even brought up on charges.

The "Watergate Scandal" was a mockery of justice. President Nixon had the right to spy on anyone he wanted, the same way that President Bush does.
