I'm interested in any sort of film that covers either mental illness, addiction or imprisonment.
Sort of like ~ The Aviator, Shawshank Redemption, Twelve Monkey's, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, The Butterfly Effect and the Green Mile.
They don't have to be happy films, a tragic film might be nice - suit my mood!!
Any ideas greatfully accepted, thankies :)

Girl Interrupted - Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie are mental patients together.
A Beautiful Mind - Russell Crowe plays a mathematician who suffers from schitzophrenia.
Return To Paradise - Joaquin Phoenix plays a man imprisoned in Southeast Asia which is good but very hard to watch.
Walk The Line - Joaquin Phoenix as a drug addict and addicted to a woman who won't have anything to do with him.

There's another that the title escapes me but it stars Dakota Fanning, Robert Deniro and Famke Jansen. Has a surprise ending that you would never guess from the trailer or the rest of the film.

Skeleton Key - Kate Hudson is a hospice nurse who uncovers dark secrets in the Bayou.
Red Eye - Cillian Murphy holds Rachel McAdams hostage on a red eye flight.
The Beach - a mentally ill drug addict tells Leonardo Dicaprio of a hidden island paradise that is a prison as well as an insane asylum.
Please - Gerard Butler's life is falling apart due to his addictions. Found at www.atomfilms.com

If you like 12 Monkeys you will probably enjoy Dark City which stars Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Ian Richardson, William Hurt, Jennifer Connelly and Richard O'Brien. It was directed by Alex Proyas who made the Crow and I, Robot. It doesn't cover addiction, but there are themes within it to do with imprisonment and possible mental illness.

OK, I have all those great films in my dvd drawer, so here are a few of the others:
Donnie Darko
Man on Fire
Manchurian candidate
Courage Under Fire
Runaway Jury
Usual suspects
American Beauty
Negotiator
Million dollar Baby
Hostage
Fifth Element

Think that's enough to be going on with. Happy viewing.

I'll keep my suggestions coming as I continue to think of titles:

1. Twelve Angry Men (with Henry Fonda)
2. The Hustler (jackie gleason, piper laurie, george c. scott, paul newman).
3. Bicycle Thieves
(see :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bicycle_Thief)
4. Midnight Cowboy (Dustin Hoffman, John Voidt)
5. Five Easy Pieces (Jack Nicholson) - The "Chicken Salad Sandwich" scene is famous. You'll just die laughing (at this deadly serious movie).
6. Nashville

Girl interupted with Winnona Ryder and Agelina Jolie(she won an oscar for it) is about mental illness and is very good.

A beautifull Mind with Russell Crowe, also about mental illness is excellent.

Train Spotting and Requiem for a Dream are both about drug addiction, both great.

If you're looking for a really good laugh, try "The Dream Team" , one of the funniest films ever. It stars Michael Keaton as the doctor who decides to take his 4 mentally ill patients on a trip to the football game!!!!!!!!!!
Christopher LLoyd is brilliant . . . but go watch it for yourself
