Everything they do is going to be forgotten. Do they not know this?

Life in the hood isn't easy. You enter a gang because you have nothing in life. Now you have a bunch of friends who would put their life on the line for you.

You may not remember them, but their homies won't forget them.

I would like to remind you that anything anyone does will be forgotten eventually. Do you seriously think in 100 years anyone will know who you are? What about 1000?

Because everyone is proud and has a sense of honor in them no matter how much they may deny. When one's "reputation" is questioned that individual is obvsiously going to become defensive. It's not something that's only seen in "gang members".

Think of the samurai, their sense of honor was so important to them that they would comit sepukku if it was tarnished.

Not to mention if you think about it, being in a gang is a competitive thing. When you're in a compeptition you WANT to win and come out looking the best.

Moral bankruptcy sums it up well. That “rough” hood life is the real culprit, brought on by the gradual emasculation of the father image and family unit as a whole by draconian restrictions against simple legal mom and pop homespun money making endeavors, and the emplacement of too many liberal do-good programs that further degrade the family unit and the respect it generates. In third world countries there is a food stand on every street corner and kids selling ice cream from a hand cart… Not here… get your tacos from Taco Bell, your ice cream from Baskin-Robbins. That “sanitization” of poverty by liberal programs and restrictions is the root problem, pure and simple.

No they dont its about "respect" they have no real family and the gang replaces it, they live for today as most young people tend to do, its also very dificult for a young person to work their but off at say mickley D's and see some punk slinging crack making a mint. Unfortunately common sense and puberty don't go hand in hand

Gang members in general are un-educated and come from low income families where their father ( if one is around ) does not respect himself or his kids.
I think gang members hand around others who tell them what they want to hear and they respect each other because they are all loosers that need this type of positive reinforcement.

They have nothing/no one else. Too bad gangs don't focus on doing something good to be proud of as opposed to their fast, one-way trip to death or prison.

i think it's all about image. they want everyone who sees them to think of them as tough people that are not to be messed with. they want to stand out, so people who look at them will know who they are. gang members also think that acting cool is important, so they will not appear as weenies, possibly to atrract everybody's (girls' especially) attention.

Because they have none of either. It's probably hard for you to understand because my guess is that you have both.
