The answer will change depending on the perspective looking at the question.
Religiously – To pretty much instruct man and the way he should life, and to die on the cross for our sins.
Allegorically – Jesus was never a man the walked the earth, but a principle of energy that resides within each and every last one of us.
Tip:
The story of Jesus was taken from the Egyptian Messiah Horus that came 3,000 years before the Roman religion of Christianity.

It is said that Jesus was sent to the Jewish nation as a Prophet to bring them back to the ways of the Almighty since the leadership and the people had digressed from the true path and had made the religion full of rituals by the hierarchical leadership of the religion with little resemblance to earlier right ways. The Jewish rabbis of the time felt that his teachings could cause challenge to their position so they conspired with Roman authorities, who were ruling Palestine at that time, to get rid of his challenge.

In the Old Testament, when man and woman created sin..... God did something profound..... He was the first to kill an animal.... and He used the skin of it to cover man's sins....... (Genesis 3:21)

It became necessary for men to cover sins through the death of some animal which was lain on the altar for the sake of remission of sins...... and there were a number of reasons it was so......

Men became laxed in killing an animal for the covering of sin that God found it kind of offensive where it was once a pleasant odor.

So God decided that He would do something that was pleasing and would be an acceptable sacrifice..... One that would also cover the sins of mankind..... A new testament or a new covenant.....

He sent His son.....

He came to show us that we are just like him.
He wanted to let us know that What HE could Do WE could Do.
He wanted to RE-MIND US of WHO WE REALLY ARE.

Jesus is just like us, in the image and likeness of GOD. He was GOD made manifest experiencing LIFE through Jesus at the HIGHEST level. It is our first nature to be unconditionally Loving.
It is our second nature to EXPRESS our first nature consciously.

Jesus said, "What I AM, YOU ARE." "What I can do...These things and more, you shall also do..." "The Father and I are ONE." We are all ONE with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

I would recommend that you go to your local church. It seems to me that you have no idea about Jesus, and as such, The church is the best place to learn about him.
