Some laptops/notebooks have a numeric keypad overlay on the uio/jkl/m,. (you will usually see little numbers on the upper right side of the keys) keys for 10-key data entry. sometimes numlock activates, sometimes function lock. Check with te Compaq website for particulars.

This is not the best site to troubleshoot, since it's difficult to check back on your replies.

I recommend asking out at http://www.tek-tips.com where you can start a thread in the "hardware" forum. It's a lot easier to check for replies and for others to help.

Personally though, it does sound like the num lock function is stuck on. Check which letters are typing numbers instead. Then look closely at the key on your keyboard. If it has a number on the same key in small print, then you need to hit "Fn + num lk" to toggle the numbers back to off.
