I think it's both. Like if you have nothing but sons it's for a reason, but if you study hard in school and get a good job you have made your own luck.

EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON. IF IT DIDN'T, THEN NOTHING IN LIFE WOULD MAKE ANY SENSE.
THERE ARE TIMES WHEN WE DON'T ALWAYS KNOW THE REASONS FOR WHY THINGS HAPPEN THE WAY THAT THEY DO. GOD HAS TO REVEAL THEM TO US IN HIS OWN SWEET TIME.
SOMETIMES WE ARE IMPATIENT AND CANNOT WAIT FOR THE REASONING TO HAPPEN, BUT EVENTUALLY IT DOES, AND THEN MOST MYSTERIES ARE RESOLVED.
