How can I connect my DS to the internet so that I can play games online?

I have just gotten a DS for Christmas, along with the game "Mario Kart." I am eager to play with other people online but I don't actually know how to do that. I've tried to figure it out but I've had no success. Are there other things that I have to buy to make my DS connectable to the internet? I'd really appreciate a comprehensive guide on what I have to do, thanks!

you need a wireless internet connection to connect it and maybe an adapter aswell which i believe you can buy at game stores.
