First: Stop trying to get him to have bowel movements!! You're going to cause his body to be unable to function properly; and you could cause mental/emotional problems in him as well.!!!!

A baby six months old shouldn't be having "issues". You need to talk to a pediatrician about this. For all you know, he could have some kind of medical problem that needs to be addressed immediately. To the best of my understanding, if you call some doctor's office and tell them what the issue is they may agree to see your baby now.

In general, when it comes to encouraging diaper-soiling:

Don't give him formula with iron in it.

Don't give him rice, oatmeal, or corn cereals (they're all constipating).

Don't give him more fiber. Fiber makes a hard-to-pass stool. I'm not saying people shouldn't have fiber, but in this particular case try letting him do without it for now. He can always eat more later when he's straightened out.

Give him applesauce a few times a day.
Make sure he has lots of juice or water to drink.

If you're doing something that will "clean him out" he isn't going to go for quite some time after that, which would explain part of the problem you seem to think he has.

Please: Call some doctor's office, and talk to them about this. If you can't or won't do that, then just give him his formula (switch to no-iron for now) and baby foods other than cereals. Add more baby fruits and juices and or water.

I think juice would be your best bet. Maybe some warm apple juice. I would occasionally boil some prunes (real prunes) in a bit of water with sugar and let my kids drink the warmed, sweetend prune juice from the cup or bottle. Or, some plain old warm sugar water. If the prune juice or sweetend water is warm enough, it won't take much. I would recommend that you wait until morning or at least be willing to check him frequently during the night because it generally doesnt take long for it to work and you don't want him sitting in a dirty diaper all night and end up with a rash. You can also put vaseline (a lot) on a rectal thermometer and insert it into his rectum a little way and this will stimulate the anus and produce a bowel movement. The vaseline will also help it come out. This won't hurt your son, he just won't like it being done.

Have you taken the baby to see the pediatrician? First of all enemas can be very dangerous for a baby of that age, and you don't want the baby to become dependant on the enemas or the prune juice. The only person who should administer an enema on a baby of that age is a doctor. The problem could be just the milk that the baby is on. Iron can constipate a baby. Take the baby to the doctor and find out whats going on.

Please stop giving enemas and see a doctor as soon as you can. How often are you having to help him to go? It is normal for babies to go up to 5 or 6 days without having a bowel movement. Try letting him go for that long and see if he can go on his own. Hold back on foods high in iron too and encourage fruit. If his body gets used to laxatives, the muscle looses it's tone to be able to function on it's own. Just like if someone always lifted your arms for you, you would eventually have no muscle left. Let his bowels gain their strength back. Please see a doctor asap if he doesn't go after 5 days. There could be something more serious going on.

Because you've made his bowels dependent upon the prune juice and enemas ( I can't imagine WHY you'd give enemas to a baby that young to begin with)...

If your regular doctor won't see him then you need to take him somewhere else. There are free clinics and if you can't find one then take him to the E.R....they can't turn you and your baby away. You don't need to be giving an enema to a baby unless it is under a doctor's care...please have him seen soon! He could have serious problems especially if you keep doing that to him!

The docs tell you to use glycerin suppositories if u have to, but doc's usually don't freak out til after 4-5 days w/o a bowl movement. That's when they tell u to use the supossitories.

All fruits are fruit and vegetables. A "vegetable" is a plant, any part of which is employed for food.

In the superstore, fruits are usually picked out much too soon. Some are rocks, many are bitter. Some of the fresh vegetables are typical right (zucchini, onions, garlic, lettuce, greens, and a few others) so I'd have to go with vegetables.
