Fish will rest once the room as gone dark. The room does not have to be competely dark, but your tank light does have to be off for at least 8 hours. Other wise your fish will suffer from light stress if the light is left on permently

Fish do not sleep, they do rest but they cannot attain a state of sleep as we know it because they have to keep moving to breathe. You should be able to distinguish fish according to their geographical location, you will need a good reference though.

where are people getting the idea that fish don't sleep?
try leaving your aquarium lights on for a week straight without turning it off... see what happens...

they don't seem to require as much sleep as we do...it really depends on the fish..

Just to let you know ... fish don't sleep! They will swim or stay in one postion 24 hours a day. As long as they can breathe and eat, they don't have to sleep.

-- take note:- if your fish is upside down or on its side not moving, then its 100% DEAD!
